Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Full salary range $53.15 to $88.78.

Graduate from an accredited college of law, admittance to practice law in the State of Minnesota and five (5) years of full time or equivalent part time work in a County Attorney’s Office, criminal defense/civil practice, or military prosecution/defense on an equivalent basis to full time prosecution experience.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

 Nature of Work

At the direction of the County Attorney, performs the duties of Managing Attorney in the Office of the County Attorney in Olmsted County. As a senior member of the staff, prepares and presents complex and difficult criminal or civil prosecution cases on behalf of the county; assists the County Attorney to develop and implement major policy and procedural decisions in the County Attorney’s Office and participates as a member of the management team. Supervises the work of assigned employees including Senior, Associate and Assistant Attorneys. Assigns cases and projects, directs daily and routine work assignments and conducts performance evaluations. Leverages the strengths of team members, clarifies roles and responsibilities, and develops employees to reach optimal goals. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

Recommends hiring, promotions, and assignments for team members, and provides regular and timely feedback. Manages employee performance, documentation, and disciplinary actions. 
Mentors and gives direction to staff members
Evaluates criminal or civil cases and approves charges and dispositions
Participates in regular staff and management meetings, provides input and decision making in the day to day operational issues of the office
Represents the County Attorney in complex legal matters
Conducts investigations. Provide advice to law enforcement and/or social service personnel to prepare for and try criminal or civil cases in district and appellate courts
Prepares and presents on behalf of the state or county at pretrial, trial and other matters
Advises officials, boards and committees and prepares resolutions, agreements, contracts and opinions
Presents matters to grand juries and represents the County Attorney’s office in appellate cases
Resolves various legal issues within the jurisdiction of the County Attorney
Develops, recommends and implements major civil and criminal protocol policies and procedures
Performs related work as assigned
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Thorough knowledge of the duties, power, limitations and authority of the County Attorney
Knowledge of the organization, powers and limitations of County Government
Knowledge and ability to present and conduct complex trials effectively
Knowledge of civil law and procedure
Skill in decision making that has significant impact on the lives of persons accused of or victimized by crimes
Skill in the use of computers and technology
Ability to supervise and direct the work of other professional and paraprofessional staff members
Ability to present statements of fact, law and argument clearly and logically in written or verbal form
Ability to appraise, interpret, and apply legal principles and precedents to difficult legal problems
Ability to work effectively with others
Ability to manage time and workload effectively
Ability to represent the Office of the County Attorney at public and private functions and convey a positive image of law enforcement and social service agencies and county attorney staff
