PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

The City of Bloomington Legal Department is seeking a legal intern to complete a paper document scanning project. The Legal Department stores older civil and criminal paper records in several areas and is seeking a candidate to scan and properly store the electronic records in the Legal Department’s electronic files. Scanning and electronic storage is the purpose of this position, but other duties may be assigned, time permitting.

This is a part-time, temporary position, with the expectation of 20-30 hours per week for approximately one (1) to three (3) months, or until the project is complete. Schedule and hours to be discussed upon hiring. The position does not include remote work.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Scan paper documents, as directed by supervising attorney
  • Upload and store electronic files to Legal Department electronic repositories, as directed by supervising attorney
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with supervising attorney
  • Utilize office technology, including Microsoft Office applications, Adobe PDF applications, scanning equipment, and copiers
  • Maintain confidentiality and attorney-client privileges

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with supervising attorney
  • Ability to differentiate between legal document types
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to use professional judgment in limited circumstances
  • Understanding of confidentiality and attorney-client privilege considerations and how these concepts relate to document storage

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree; AND
  • As of the 2025-26 academic year, will be entering law school or has completed the first year of law school
  • Basic proficiency in the use of office technology, including Microsoft Office applications, Adobe PDF applications, scanning equipment, and copiers
